Gambling and Gender
Who gambles more, is it the male or the female? That is hard to say given that there are more than a dozen casinos all across the country In this chapter, we know the answer. In a study done in Manitoba, Canada published in April of 2006, it shows there are more men who have a gambling problem. This has prompted other researches to conduct more studies as to why men do it. Aside from the casino, there are also other venues for gambling like the racetracks, sports venues and betting shops. The look or design of these places are targeted more toward men than women. This shows that although women now have the right to vote, the country as a whole still needs a lot of improvement in the way such venues are made. But you shouldn’t count the women out yet. During the past decade, gambling has become acceptable for the opposite sex. While the men gamble on sports and the stock market, you will find women going for other things like lotto and slot machines. Why you may ask? This is because women want to experience the thrill and escape from their reality. This is evident because women prefer to gamble on games that will maximize their playing time, but with less money to spend. Most women chose to participate in this activity to lessen the boredom, loneliness and isolation at home. But when things get ugly, women will more than likely seek help sooner than men, which in turn may avert the crisis before it gets worse. One group that you can go to is Gamblers Anonymous. They have been in operation for more than thirty years and will continue to do so as long as people are still coping with this disease. They have branches all across the country so check them out online or give them a call. In fact, women make most of the calls to them. This has made some experts think that treatment and prevention programs for gambling will better work with more female involvement. A study conducted showed that women accessed the help line at a greater rate the men. The average length of time before a women decided to get help was one to two years unlike the men who were concerned for more than two years. When talking to a help line operator, women talk shorter than men. Females usually spend about 18.5 minutes against the men that is 21.5 minutes. The age of women who do call are from 22-58 years of age. Men on the other hand are 18-62 years old. Some of the things that are brought up during the phone call are concerns about paying bills and debts. If asked why they gambled in the first place, many will stay in the beginning, it was just for fun but things changed and they got hooked with this vice. Just because women call a help line more than men does not mean that more women gamble. As studies have shown, females recognize the problem sooner, which is why most operators encounter them instead of the males. There are other support groups aside from the one mentioned. You just have to do some research, find out when the meeting will be held, have the willingness to admit that you have a problem and come on time. Change will come so be patient remember that you are not doing this for yourself but also your family. So the question then remains, who gambles more the men or the women? The answer is men because they are the ones who are the breadwinners of the family even if women have begun taking positions in the workforce. In the end, gender does not matter because financial problems happen due to gambling. This addiction of theirs does not help them but also destroys their relationship with their loved ones. It is not yet too late to stop gambling but you have to sacrifice a lot in order to stop it. |
