Gambling and Self-destruction
Many people that go into gambling do not realize that their lives are being destroyed. This is because gambling affects ones’ relationship with others especially their families and friends. In this chapter, you will find out why gambling is a destructive form of entertainment. Gambling is an English term that has many meanings. These days, in western societies, it has an economic definition referring to “wagering money or something of material value on an event with an uncertain outcome with the primary intent of winning additional money or material goods.” Like any form of addiction, compulsive gambling comes from an emotional problem that causes a chemical imbalance in our brains. Although some will dispute or agree to the fact this could be genetic, there are those that believe society is to blame. There is a relationship between gambling addiction and destructive behavior because when the money runs out, the gambler becomes desperate and will do things like forging, embezzling or stealing. The gambler will also lose people that are supposed to be dear to him especially family and friends. The individual may even become an alcoholic or a drug user. Those who choose the coward's way out will commit suicide. Lets take one story where a poor wife had to deal with her compulsive gambling husband for several years. She tried her best to keep the relationship going but in the end, she couldn’t stand it any longer and decided to file for divorce. There are countless stories like this one and it doesn’t matter what kind of gambler the individual is. For the sake of knowledge, there are two types of problematic gamblers. The first one is known as action gamblers and consists of males and escape gamblers representing the opposite sex. Action Gamblers generally start gambling at a young age during the teenage years. These boys usually are bright, score high on an IQ test but things change the moment they get hooked into gambling. The games that they place require a certain amount of skill. Some examples of these are pari-mutuel, black jack, poker, sports betting, and recently trading of stocks, commodities, futures, options, and bonds. When they succeed, they have a sense of euphoria very similar to someone who just smoked pot. Generally these individuals are very ego driven, controlling, risk taking, narcissistic, sociable, and, like the narcissist, in need of approval, affirmation, and confirmation. The need to be recognized shows that they have very low esteem. The difference between escape gamblers is that aside from this happening more often to women, this occurs much later on in life when the woman is 30 years and up. Such women were productive members of society but at one point were abused verbally or physically so this becomes an outlet to show that they have empowerment. The games that these people play are usually no-brainers. Some examples of these are slot machine, bingo and the lottery. It should be noted that women who gamble in this form appear numb or become hypnotized. They usually feel free of their emotional and physical pain when taking part in a gambling activity. The action and the escape gambler will fall into the three phases of gambling before they begin to exhibit destructive behavior. After winning a few then losing a lot, they become desperate and will do just about anything to have money to gamble with. As mentioned earlier, these people will lie or even steal. They don’t care who they come across even if it means hurting those that they love. The reign of destructive behavior may stop for a while when they get help but things will once again continue when the urge comes back again. Instead of laying the blame on casinos or other venues, we must help those that have succumbed to this destructive behavior. Although it’s a fact that they have to admit to themselves that they need assistance in order for this to work, we should do our part by in order for them to stop this destructive behavior that does not do any good. |
