How to Stop Gambling
Almost everything is good in moderation. But some people take it too far and as a result get into big trouble. Gambling is one of them and if you are really serious about giving up the addiction, you better read on. The first step is for you to admit that you have a gambling problem. Chances are, people have mentioned this to you in the past but such words fell onto deaf ears. You even deny the fact that you are an addict when everyone knows this is not true. The most common solution to stop gambling is to find support. You can get this easily from friends and family at no extra charge. But if they don’t have the answers, don’t be ashamed to go to a professional. People like them have dealt with people in the same position as you and have given up gambling for good. If counseling does not help, you may have to use medication. Certain anti-depressants have proven to be effective against gambling addiction. You will just have to get a medical prescription from the doctor. Group therapy is also popular. One of the most renowned is Gamblers Anonymous discussed in the previous chapter. They have over 1200 locations nationwide so come to one. These people meet regularly and if it has worked for others, it is also possible it can do some good for you. Spending all that money in the casino, online or in the stock market has surely drained your funds. You will have to do some cutbacks on expenses first until you are able to be financially stable once again. You will not give up gambling overnight. As part of giving up this habit, one way you can take a look at yourself is by keeping a diary. You should note where did you gamble, how much did you spend and lose. If you add the amount of money you spent in a week or even a month, only then will you realize that this could have been used on better things like buying clothes or spending time with the family. Once it begins to sink in, you will have to avoid going to places like the casino or the racetrack and sites that you have used to place a bet. Keep your mind off gambling by spending more time at work, hanging out with friends or spending quality time with your spouse and children. You can also spend time by yourself by engaging in a new sport or exercise that frees the mind of trouble. Studies show that compulsive gamblers are mentally and emotionally weak. Just as the saying goes, it is all in the mind and by changing your attitude to something more positive, you can change and better person. When the time is right, you have to apologize to the people you have hurt and admit that you are a gambler. It takes a real person to admit that he or she is wrong. Doing so enables the individual to feel good again and move on with life. You are not the only gambler in this world when there are more than 4 million across the country, which does not yet account for the youth that are more susceptible now to make a quick buck by engaging in this vice. By deciding on your own to stop gambling, you are able to save your family and yourself from harm. You can just imagine what could happen if other gamblers decided to quit themselves and things like the number of broken families, divorce, suicide and crime rates will go down. Putting an end to a bad habit takes a lot of will power. If you can't face it alone, there are people that care and some of them are strangers willing to lend a helping hand. Again, if you want to stop gambling for good, take a look at yourself and be committed to doing it. You don’t just say it verbally but show this through action by understanding why this became a habit in the first place and then move on. Everyone makes a choice in life so if you have made a lot of wrong turns in the past, don't you think it is time to do the right thing? |
