    Who Gambles

    Who Are The Gambling Addicts

You can't play in the casino unless you are 18 years of age. But this doesn’t mean that people under the required age are not gambling addicts because you have to look elsewhere in order to find them.

So who are the gambling addicts? There is no specific answer for this question because it affects both genders regardless of age. This may start as young as the person reaches adolescence because one survey among respondents aged between 12 to 17 have admitted they have engaged in one form or gambling or another in the past 12 months.

The same study also pointed out that 35% say that they do this once a week. This is very disturbing because they are wasting their allowance or possibly stealing from their parents to make money. You can just imagine how much they are willing to play with when they are already working.

Who do we blame when the young are gambling? We blame the parents, of course. They could be buying sweepstakes tickets or playing a game of cards and since mom and dad didn’t say it was wrong this makes them think it is okay to do so.

You can find gambling addicts in the casino while others are at home or in bars. They will play online poker or call someone on the phone to place a bet and then see how things turn out.

There are many ways to tell if your child is a gambling addict. This can happen if they always ask for money, notice that some possessions in the house have gone missing, encountered unexplained charges on the credit card bill, a drop in grades, an increase in the phone bill, a sudden interest in sports and watching the game live as often as possible and the unexplained wealth.

According to the California Council on Problem Gambling or CCPG, your child could fall into one of 4 types of gambling addicts. They could be an action problem gambler, escape problem gambler, Internet problem gambler and/or stock market problem gambler.

You child could fall into one of the three except for the stock market because you have to sign forms and fill out documents in order to have a portfolio of investments.

This is the reason that this trend goes into adulthood. In fact, most of the gambling addicts are working professionals that have established careers and are married.

In both instances, the person will need help. You can get them into group counseling, one on one help from a certified professional or psychotherapy. Aside from going to a hospital or a clinic, try going to a non-profit organization to protect your identity.

Everything that happens there will remain confidential so only those that need to know are informed.

Just how big is a problem like gambling addiction? According to the National Institute of Mental Health, there are about 4.2 million Americans. To makes matters worse, more than half of these individuals are middle class people that earn about $25,000 a year.

Gambling in the US is legal. If the parents are the addicts, the after effect will usually make the children engage in this in the future because they were emotionally abandoned.

Some casinos have reported that the children were left in the cars for hours while mom or dad is playing inside. There are those who even bring their children to play a game of bingo while others simply leave the kids with a babysitter.

Aside from emotional abandonment, things could also get violent for children at home when they are physically, mentally and verbally abused. No one will be able to help them if both the parents are into it and this cycle will continue until they finally realize to stand up for themselves.

This is the reason that parents should act like responsible adults and never even teach gambling at home. They should also be told to stay away from individuals that do this in school or in the neighborhood because teens are three times more likely to become addicts than those who are already of legal age.

The point is, almost everyone can be a gambling addict. Once you try it out and enjoy that feeling, without self-control, this is no longer about pleasure but keeping up a bad habit.
